Bore Tide and Gold Panning

Sunday, June 15th

Another gray, misty day here in Anchorage.  I don't think they ever get rain, just continuous mist.

Patti and Teddi were scheduled for grooming today, but the shop called to say, the groomer was sick.

Another change in plans for the day.  We went to the Air Museum which was quite interesting.  It was on the lake where most of the water planes take off and land.  We learned a lot about the bush pilots and now also know that many teenagers have flying licenses before they get drivers licenses.

A bush plane--note the big wheels designed for landing on the tundra!
Headed out for a Father's Day trip to somewhere...

Float planed coming in to land on Lake Hood--the busiest float plane airport in the US

We got to see the charter planes loading the gear and supplies (7 cases of beer, i case of liquor, 1 box of wine, etc) to fly the fishers out to their cabins for the week.
Ray, Tam, Betty, and Jack watch the booze going into the charter plane!!
After leaving the museum we headed to a recommended restaurant for lunch for Father's Day. Unfortunately, we did not check and the restaurant was not open for lunch,  We then continued in to a skiing resort of Girdwood and ate at Jack Sprat's.  Area was lovely with lush green on the mountains and snow at the top.

Tam, Ray and Betty then tried their luck at "gold panning".  We did not strike it rich, but will definitely try it again and again.

Picked a creek beside the highway just up from Girdwood, AK
"This looks like a good spot...see any nuggets?"

"Are we doing this correctly?  I don't see any gold!"

"Aw, shucks, that's just a light colored rock, not a nugget!"

After a stop for some ice cream, we again tried the bore tide.  Were given all sorts of information at the restaurant as to when and where it was going to be.  After a very long wait, we found it to be a disappointment, but we can say that we saw it.

Information about the bore tide in Turnagain Arm, Cook Inlet, south of Anchorage, AK

We expected a wave around 3 feet high...instead, it was just a bit of a ripple in the main channel.

This wave was a bit stronger than the main channel...a surfer had surfed it to a good ways!

Here he is...paddling along to come into shore after losing the curl of the bore tide.

It is now 10pm and I am going to take Patti for a walk because the clouds have cleared and the sun is shining.  Still cool, but nice to see the sun.
